Mitochondrial sequencing enables detection and analysis of mitochondrial disease-associated variants, within the genome or exome. This kind of analysis is specifically indicated to investigate maternal inheritance. In additon, it allows accurate measurement of heteroplasmy (the phenomenon for which, within the same cell, it is common for mutations to affect only some mitochondria, leaving most unaffected).
